Nicolas Buchoud is a leading French urban development and sustainable metropolitan systems expert. He has recently been involved in large scale metropolitan projects such as Le Grand Paris or the Greater Moscow international consultations, working on contemporary urban challenges globally, from Vancouver to Vladivostok, Paris to Bandung. He has a long standing and high level European and international experience in complex urban development strategies and negotiations, crossing urban regeneration and urban innovation, including civil society involvement in complex decision making processes.
Nicolas Buchoud is the Founding Principal of Renaissance Urbaine (2006), the urban R&D company based inParis, bringing strategic counseling to public and private stakeholders in the fields of urban development andsustainable investment policies and projects. He is also directly involved with the French national innovationprogram (PIA), working with private investors and public agencies for the implementation of a nationalInstitute of Excellence on energy efficiency in construction and transportation.
Renaissance Urbaine works in France and internationally (BRICS, especially Russia and Indonesia, Japan, North-America…) Nicolas Buchoud has served over 10 years in the public sector in France, as head of a national urban regeneration project in a Paris suburban low income social housing area, chief of staff of a city mayor, and senior advisor to the President of the Paris Ile de France Region.
A fellow of ULI and member and partner of several urban development networks in Europe and globally (GlobalPlanners Network, American Planning Association, Deutsche Akademie für Städtebau und Landesplanung,Habitat Professionals Forum with UN Habitat…) Nicolas Buchoud is the co-founder of a Paris based think-tank, the Cercle de réflexion Grand Paris de l’Investissement Durable, promoting enhanced US/Europe cooperations as drivers for more resilient and economically efficient urban investment schemes.A regular speaker for economic, professionals, academic, political audiences, Nicolas Buchoud has published numerous books (Better professionals! Better Cities! 2012, Strategic City , 2008, Enacting urban renewal , 2005, Ces banlieues qui nous font peur , 2003) and articles on urban innovation and networks and regularly teaches and lectures in international conferences. He sits on several scientific councils and committees regarding sustainable built environments, resilient metropolitan systems… and regularly works as an expert with UN Habitat.
He is graduated in public law and political science (MA), planning and urban development (MA), and XVIIth century Chinese history (MA), from Sciences Po and La Sorbonne.
